Why scheduled jobs need monitoring

Background jobs often run without a person watching each execution. A failed billing export, data sync, report, or backup can remain unnoticed until another workflow depends on its output. Cron job monitoring uses a heartbeat from the job to show whether it is checking in within its expected schedule.

For each job, record how often it should run, how long a normal run may take, who owns it, and what downstream work relies on it. These details help set a realistic missed-run window and give responders a starting point when a heartbeat does not arrive.

Set up heartbeat checks safely

Add the monitoring heartbeat to the job’s normal completion path, and make sure failure paths are visible too. If a job only sends a heartbeat at startup, it may report healthy even when the work later fails. Use the integration pattern documented for your application and avoid placing secret heartbeat URLs in public repositories or logs.

Test the setup with a non-production job before relying on it. Confirm that a successful run reports in the expected window and that a deliberately skipped test run produces the alert your team expects. Do not disrupt a production task just to test monitoring.

Respond to missed-run alerts with context

When a job misses its expected check-in, verify whether it started, completed, or failed partway through. Review scheduler logs, recent deployments, and dependencies before rerunning work; repeating a job without checking whether it partially completed can create duplicate actions.

Route alerts to the job owner through an available integration, document safe retry steps, and review your current check limits on the pricing page. Use incident management when a missed job affects customer-facing service or requires coordinated response.
